When I think about that it makes me very angry. I was born and raised in the north, and I find that the group of people whom I most loathe is my stereotypical view of U.S. southern whites. I realize it's a stereotypical view and that it's not true, but I don't really know where these feelings of hate come from..... (probably incidents such as this one)
The interesting thing being that I assume southern whites feel the same way against northern whites.... us tree-hugging bleeding hart bastards up here. :-D I also wonder how much racism has lived on simply because some folks in the south feel like it's a unique part of their personal identity.
In addition, we see the political fallout of this on nearly a daily basis. While alot of southerners may not racist, (that I am aware of directly, at least) there are very substantial political differences when it comes to human rights as a whole. It seems it is those very differences that people make part of their political ideology that drives the sides further apart.
In the end, what amazes me is the duration of the negative effects of slavery and war. As long as this country stands I suspect we will continue to feel the pain...
